Ask any real estate agent and they will tell you that the most important room in a house is the kitchen. You just need to get this room right or most of whatever you invest in the rest of your home just will not give you 100% when it's valuable.
So, the hottest trend in kitchen design and decoration right now is natural materials and appearance. The soft earth color of the walls, solid wood finished cabinets and yes natural stone floor tiles complete the look. Just imagine about how many square feet your kitchen floor takes up.
So, aren't there artificial stone floor tiles or cultured stone floor tiles that are much cheaper now? The answer to this is yes, and in fact there have been tremendous advances in replicating the look of granite, especially polished.
The truth, however, is that product engineers and developers have worked hard over the years, but cannot create a fake stone product that is 100% indistinguishable from the real McCoy. Some get terribly close, but in the end, no one looks quite real.
Today, polished granite is one of the most popular options for natural stone tile, and there are several good reasons for this. The first reason is that the granite looks just amazing with its metal speckles sprinkled in white, gray, and black translucent cottage cheese texture.
Then the granite is harder. Really hard! In fact the darker the granite, the more complex it is, with black granite being the hardest of all. What makes it dark is the high iron content and the iron hardness is also the reason why polished black granite is the most expensive of all granite floor tiles.
Hard granite is more expensive to mine, cut and polish. However, it does not appear that softer stones, such as lighter granite, or any other more exotic stones that are now being tiled are worn quickly today because they are not as hard as black granite.
It just does not apply, and besides the fact that some soft natural stone floor tiles are great because if they get scratched, they are easier to polish. Also, some of the softer natural stone tiles have stunning colors and great designs.
Travertine tiles are a good example of this. Being a type of limestone, it has a variety of soft earthy colors, from white to tan and even light brown. In addition, since the stone is not as rare or difficult to work with as many others, these tiles are also some of the most affordable on the market.
Be that as it may, just because they are less expensive does not mean they do not have interesting designs because they have. You can see the travertine that is formed by the rapid formation of lime around the limestones and ancient caves. Stalagmites and stalactites in caves are made of travertine.
